During a “just looking” day with Judy Buck, an agent at CB Lota Realty, Vicky and Don came across this wonderfully cozy home on La Loma Plaza in the historic section of Taos.
“We didn’t really expect to be buying a home. Our ideal was a place within walking distance of Taos Plaza. Everything available with that description seemed to be condos or newer homes. Just not our style.” As soon as they saw Casa Bonita they knew they had found what they didn’t even know they wanted – a vacation home in Taos!
Remodeling the house in 1986, prominent Northern New Mexico developer Vishu McGhee, took the utmost care to preserve the original, authentic, southwest charm.
When it was completed, the result was Casa Bonita - Winter warm and summer cool, thick old adobe walls with traditional 4 feet of dirt on the roof (great natural air conditioner and heat retainer) - wood burning kiva fireplace, hand hewn vigas overhead - a tunnel going from a trap door in the front closet toward the center of the old plaza for escape from early invaders.
What history is in this special Taos homestead, once the church rectory and still attached to the historic La Loma chapel - now used 3 or 4 times a year for intimate weddings and baptisms. This is a natural happening for the "Bride and Groom" to be with an attached chapel and honeymoon suite all in one. Request special arrangements for use of chapel.
As an added bonus, both front and back yards are enclosed for guests with "little ones" or pets and for added privacy and sense of seclusion.
Casa Bonita owners, Vicky and Don, invite you to stay at Casa Bonita (now Casa de la Capilla – House of the Chapel). Taos is beautiful, changing with the seasons. Come and enjoy a home and town that have a sense of drawing you in. Be careful – you might end up with a vacation (or even full time) Taos home.

|I just want to thank you for the use of your delightful vacation home in Taos. It is beautifully done and was a real treat during our stay. I and a friend, both of us architects, are probably a little more observant of buildings than the average person. We enjoyed the details, the careful planning--all in fabulous adobe. We want to thank you for letting us share your home. B.W. from L.A.
|What a delightful house you have in Taos! After a horrible trip down from Boulder (a long story) how pleased we were to be surprised with Casa Bonita instead of a little condo. The kids loved it and so did we. Your notes were helpful, and everything was first class. I hope you get to enjoy it often.
Yours, Becky E., Longmont, CO
|We have been enjoying your Taos home for the last few weeksand it has been great for us. We admire the artwork done by Mrs. Douglass. Lee, my wife is also an artist and has created a couple of nice paintings while here. Architecturally, the place is very interesting and you've done a fine job of renovating. It's our first experience in an adobe structure and we're enjoying the "quiet", the sense of solitude that comes with these thick walls and the deep, viga supported, dirt filled ceilings. We're leaving in a few days and wanted you to know how much we enjoyed your home.
Sincerely, L & B Goode, Connecticut
|We had a fabulous five days at Casa Bonita. The details of this home are amazing. The kitchen actually had spices that we left at home. We have made a tradition of skiing in a state that we haven't been for superbowl weekend. We rated Casa Bonita with the best accommodations of the seven states we have visited for this tradition. Simply loved this home."

|We have loved our stay at Casa Bonita!
We were so comfortable and the owners have thought of everything. We most enjoyed: the fireplace, the kitchen, and the comfortable bedrooms. We appreciate how the kitchen was well stocked and how many towels were here. It also was fantastic that it stayed warm and cozy during our Spring Break March vacation. We hope to come back next year.

|We truely enjoyed our stay at the Casa Bonita! We found everything we needed and more. The decor was very special. We are already planning a return next summer. The location was awesome! Thanks again for an incredible vacation stay!
|Great house! We will return! This quaint adobe house just minutes walk from the square was perfect! It had all the little things. The kitchen was fully stocked with spices and baking needs. The house had all the linens necessary, including paper towels, tissue, and TP. We way over packed thinking this place would be like most other rentals. The condition of the house was immaculately clean. I would recommend this rental to everyone! It has apple TV and a mac mini with printer/fax and wifi. It is a historic home with 21st century pleasures! S. Neli
|We had a great stay at Casa Bonita! After long days at the Wool Fest we returned to our little retreat to look at all our buys and knit away. We were close to great restaurants that we thoroughly enjoyed...especially Byzantium. The Wool Women, Colorado Springs
|August at Casa Bonita: A very nice, well stocked historic property. The location was great and we have stayed many times/places in Taos. This was the best. M. Louks
|Good stay! Home was very clean and well kept. Good location to town and to Taos Ski Valley and Angel Fire T. Peters
|Delightful stay in Taos. We are a retired couple who stayed with another couple in Casa Bonita for 4 nights. Photos and other information about the property accurately described it. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. It was clean with enough space for 4 of us, though one bedroom was much smaller than the other. We ate outside most of the time, but we easily could have eaten inside. The kitchen was well stocked with utensils and basic supplies. We used the Wi-Fi connection extensively in a room off the kitchen. The location is within easy walking distance of central Taos. We walked to the Harwood Museum, several art galleries, the Kit Carson home, and two restaurants. It was a short drive to the Taos Pueblo and longer drive to the Rio Grande gorge. We took a day trip to drive the scenic "high road" to Chimayo. We could have used another couple days to see more. It was a delightful stay in a beautiful home. R. Miles
